When an Idea
Takes Root
Great custom design often begins with a simple question: What if?
For the Pearland Library, PGAL came to SOELBERG with an inspired vision; a large-scale textural tree that would transform the lobby into a memorable architectural moment. It needed to feel completely unique to the space, deliver undeniable visual impact and, if possible, introduce acoustic performance through our MUTO PET acoustic material.
The idea was ambitious. Exactly the kind of challenge we love.
The Inspiration
From Pattern to Possibility
Rather than starting from scratch, we began by looking at our existing pattern library differently. Our Striscia pattern became the foundation for the tree trunk, but with a twist. Instead of focusing on the pattern itself, we explored its negative space, manipulating the geometry to form the organic structure and movement of the trunk.
For the canopy, PGAL found inspiration in our Spaccato pattern. We evolved its fractured geometry into a custom composition of leaves, cutting completely through the MDF face panels to reveal Lichen Green MUTO PET acoustic panels behind them. Suddenly, pattern became imagery. MDF and PET became one surface. Texture, color, dimension and acoustic materiality worked together to tell a story.

The design called for another layer of customization: a ceramic-painted MDF finish. Painting isn’t one of our in-house processes, but that didn’t mean the idea had to change. We collaborated with the subcontractor to develop a solution that allowed each component to move efficiently from our manufacturing floor to finishing and ultimately to the wall. SOELBERG manufactured and supplied the raw MDF panels with an adhesive backer so they could be field painted, aligned with their corresponding Lichen Green MUTO PET panels and installed as a unified system.
And this wasn’t a collection of independent panels. The entire tree was engineered as a fully force-matched composition so the pattern flowed continuously from panel to panel and seam to seam across the installation.

What began as PGAL’s sketch of a tree became something much bigger: an example of what can happen when designers, manufacturers and installers are willing to explore together.
We combined standard patterns in unexpected ways. We manipulated positive and negative space. We layered MDF with acoustic PET. We coordinated an outside finishing process. We engineered a large-scale, seam-matched installation. And we manufactured it all with the precision, quality and remarkably fast lead times our customers expect.
The Pearland Library is more than a custom wall feature. It’s proof that a product collection doesn’t have to define the boundaries of a design. Sometimes it’s simply the place where the idea begins.
