HOW TO SPECIFY

3D Laminate Manufacturing

Our 3D laminate products are created utilizing computer controlled machining and thermoforming pressing technology processes. This
process consists of:

  1. A substrate such as MDF (medium density fiberboard) is machined on a computer-controlled router into a specific shape or design.
  2. The part is sprayed with heat-activated, water based, adhesive and allowed to dry.
  3. The part is placed on a tray and a sheet of 3D laminate is fed from a roll and placed on the tray.
  4. The tray is transported into a press where the 3D laminate is heated until pliable and formed via vacuum and positive pressure onto the part.
  5. Once formed the tray exits the press and the parts are trimmed from the formed sheet.

Materials used in 3D Manufacturing

3D Thermoplastic Laminates mainly consist of:

  • PVC, fillers such as chalk and pigments
  • Stabilizers
  • Minimal percentages of plasticizers (No DEHP)
  • No formaldehyde, cadmium, lead, mercury or chromium composites, azo dyes, or lead-containing pigments are used.

Please note: Delamination will occur when laminated products are exposed to heat higher than 150 degrees.

Adhesives

Polyurethane Dispersion (PUD) adhesives are water-based and are available in 2 different forms; two-component reactive products with crosslinker added separately and single-component with integrated crosslinker.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

MDF is a wood-based substrate consisting of fine soft and/or hardwood fibers that blend in vertical and horizontal directions. The surface is sanded and polished on both sides during manufacture and is melamine-coated on one side. We offer three MDF options:

Premium MDF

The medium density fiberboard product of choice when looking for optimal quality, consistency in the most demanding of applications. With a Class C fire rating, our Premium MDF has a uniform density profile that offers a stable core and surface making it ideal for routered doors, for printing and laminating, as well as surface and edge-machining applications.

FF MDF

Our FF MDF or NAUF MDF is produced using a no added urea-formaldehyde resin process and 100% recycled and/or recovered wood material. This EPP (Environmentally Preferable Product) certified MDF qualifies for no added U-F resin project requirements and may contribute to LEED points.

Fire Rated / FF

When you need a fire-rated no added urea-formaldehyde resin MDF for paneling, cabinetry, shelving, trims and furniture, our Fire Rated Formaldehyde Free MDF is the best in class. This UL approved, Class A/Class 1 fire-rated panel is ideal for interior, non-structural use in public areas such as schools, hotels, and restaurants. The design flexibility and working ability make it an ideal choice for a variety of applications.

Baltic Birch Plywood

The Natura Collection architectural panels are manufactured from a Baltic Birch plywood core. Using unique routing methods, we create texture and dimension by exposing the multiple layers in the plywood core. Soelberg Industries makes every effort to use the highest quality material available. Because of the natural characteristics of plywood, variations in color, pattern, texture, grain and density should not be considered defects but rather unique and individual characteristics to the product. While the patterns are programmed to run continuous from sheet to sheet, the color consistency will vary. Clients’ purchase and installation of the Natura Collection panels constitute the acknowledgement of the individuality and risks inherent in the use and installation of this natural product.
The Natural Collection patterns are available unfinished in raw Baltic Birch which achieves a Class C fire rating. In order to achieve a Class A fire rating, an appropriate flame coating will need to be applied. All finishing should be done in accordance with local building standards and completed by a licensed finishing contractor.

Soelberg is Green

Soelberg Industries feels it is important not only to create durable, high-quality products but to ensure that every piece of material we manufacture is safe for the environment and meets the highest standards of indoor air quality. Thatʼs why we use MDF that consists of 100% recycled/reclaimed wood products and use only water-based adhesives in all our products. Because of our commitment to the environment, we use products from mills certified to the Composite Panel Associationʼs Environmentally Preferable Product standards and our products can qualify for up to 6 of the U.S. Green Building Councilʼs LEED credits.

Soelberg Industries recycles their scrap from the manufacturing process. Our wood waste is sent to both a sewer treatment facility and dairy farms to be mixed with human and animal waste and turned into compost for gardening and farming. Our 3D laminate waste is baled and recycled into other plastic products.

When you specify Soelberg Industriesʼ products for your construction and design projects, youʼre helping to create a greener world.

Texture Panel Installation Methods

Listed below are several installation methods for texture panels. Soelberg Industries is not liable for any third party design, engineering, or installation services or products. A licensed professional contractor should be consulted with to determine the best installation method.

Point Support

Standoffs provide a decorative and versatile way to affix panels to most substrates, including wood, concrete, studs, and gypsum. If using this installation technique, panels should be specified to be pre-drilled to accommodate the correct size of standoff required. It is recommended that for each 4ʼ x 8ʼ panel, six (6) standoffs are used to mount the panel.

Z-Clips

Z-Clips are an effective and simple installation method as long as there is sufficient material thickness for the clips to be screwed to the panel. Panels should be specified so as to ensure that there is enough material thickness to accommodate screws into the back of the panel without penetrating the design on the front of the panel. It is recommended that Z-Clips run the entire width of the panel so as to provide support for the entire panel. At least three (3) rows of Z-Clips should be used for an eight (8) foot panel and preferably four (4). The rows should be positioned at the very top and bottom of the panel and in the center in order to provide even support for the entire surface of the panel.

Construction Mastic

Construction adhesive may be used to mount panels provided that panels are specified with a raw back as opposed to the standard melamine backer and conditions provide a clean, structurally sound surface. Follow the construction mastic manufacturerʼs application instructions. The entire panel must be held in place until mastic is completely cured so as to avoid a permanent incorrect installation.

Direct Screw Attachment

Panels may be attached by screwing directly into the backs. Panels should be specified thick enough to accommodate the screws being used. It is recommended that construction mastic should also be used with this technique. If panels are being attached by screwing through the face of the panel into the wall substrate and that the panel be pre-drilled and countersunk to accommodate the screws. The hole should then be filled with a non-shrinking type of filler. This technique is not recommended for panels finished in 3D laminate.

Fireplace Installation

Many of our customers use textured panels to cover the face of their fireplace. Our products are made from wood or an MDF core and will not work with wood burning fireplaces. Many newer fireplaces allow for combustible material to be used as a surround but some do require a tolerance that will vary based on model. Is is your responsibility to consult the specifications of your fireplace to ensure that our products will work for your installation. Soelberg Industries is not responsible for warping, delaminatation or other damages caused by exposure to too much heat. Delamination will occur when products are exposed to heat higher than 150 degrees and Soelberg Industries does not warrant these issues.
